Scholarships for Undergraduate Phis

The New York Zeta Fund of the Phi Delta Theta Foundation has developed several initiatives designed to assist with the financial needs of our Phi Delta Theta brothers and to recognize certain brothers for outstanding achievement in academics and/or leadership.  The current list of merit awards and scholarships includes:  

Sound Learning Awards:  An academic award of $50 given to each Phi Delta Theta brother who achieves the Colgate University Dean's List for the semester. To qualify for this award, the student must earn a GPA above 3.30 for the semester and must be returning as an enrolled student for the following semester when the awards will be distributed (graduating seniors are not eligible for this particular award during their last semester on campus). For students who participate in study abroad programs, only grades received from a Colgate University study group will be considered as a GPA indicator for this award. It is not necessary to submit an application form for this particular award.

Knights of Pallas Award:  An academic award of $500 to the Phi Delta Theta brother who earns the highest GPA for the semester.  For students who participate in study abroad programs, only grades received from a Colgate University study group will be considered as a GPA indicator for this award. In the event of a tie, the award will be divided evenly among the winners. It is not necessary to submit an application form for this particular award.

Phikeia Award:  A $250 merit scholarship awarded to the new member of Phi Delta Theta from the Fall Semester Phikeia class who demonstrates outstanding leadership and commitment to the Fraternity. It is not necessary to submit an application form for this particular award.  After initiation, the new members will vote on and nominate the most deserving new member, from among the new members with the four lowest Bond numbers, to receive this award.

Freeman H. Allen Leadership Award:  A $1,000 merit scholarship awarded during the spring semester to a junior who demonstrates excellence in leadership. Candidates must apply for this annual award and participate in an interview with the scholarship awards committee. Consideration may be given to a student’s GPA, leadership activities within the chapter, involvement with on-campus and off-campus activities, community service, and any other information that the candidate wishes to include on his application.

Sigma Alpha Award: A $1,000 merit scholarship awarded during the spring semester to the senior who, over the course of his years as a member of the chapter, best exemplifies the spirit and pride that is Phi Delta Theta. Candidates must apply for this annual award and participate in an interview with the scholarship awards committee. Consideration may be given to a student's chapter activities, scholarship, leadership, involvement with on-campus and off-campus activities, community service, and any other information that the candidate wishes to include on his application.  

Kleberg Emerging Leader Award:  A merit scholarship awarded during the spring semester to up to five (5) sophomores who demonstrates strong leadership potential and are interested in serving as chapter officers. The recipients of this award will receive an invitation to the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute in Oxford, Ohio during the summer to participate in Phi Delta Theta's Leadership and Ethics Academy. Upon the successful completion of this program, each recipient will receive a $400 scholarship award. Candidates must apply for this award and participate in an interview with the scholarship awards committee. Consideration may be given to a student's GPA, leadership activities within the chapter, involvement with on-campus and off-campus activities, community service, and any other information that the candidate wishes to include on his application.

Bruce C. Clayton Whole Man Scholarship Award: A merit scholarship awarded during the spring semester to a sophomore who demonstrates strong leadership potential and is interested in serving as a chapter officer. The recipient of this award will receive an invitation to the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute in Oxford, Ohio during the summer to participate in what is seen as the Honors College of Phi Delta Theta's Leadership and Ethics Academy. Upon the successful completion of this program, the recipient will receive a $1,000 scholarship award. Candidates must apply for this award and participate in an interview with the scholarship awards committee. Consideration may be given to a student's GPA, leadership activities within the chapter, involvement with on-campus and off-campus activities, community service, and any other information that the candidate wishes to include on his application. 

Winnie MacKay Scholarship Awards: Need-based scholarships awarded to eligible brothers at the discretion of the scholarship committee. Both the number of scholarships considered and the dollar allocation to each respective scholarship shall be within the discretion of the committee.  Sophomores, junior and seniors are eligible to apply. Candidates must apply for this award, submit a copy of their Colgate financial aid award letter, and participate in an interview with the scholarship awards committee. A range of criteria may be considered in evaluating a scholarship application including demonstrated financial need, GPA, leadership activities within the fraternity, involvement with on-campus and off-campus activities, community service, and any other information a candidate wishes to include with his application.  

Victor A. Krivitski Scholarship Awards: A merit-based scholarship in the amount of $350 is granted at the discretion of the scholarship awards committee to all applicants who have successfully completed the national fraternity's three-module online Phikeia Education program and any required new member education training programs conducted by the New York Zeta Chapter and/or Colgate University. All new members recruited during the Fall semester are eligible to apply. Candidates must apply for the award before the application deadline. Applicants will be notified of the provisional award decisions as quickly as possible; however the award checks will not be issued until the recipient is initiated as a full member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

The Foundation will accept applications made by any one or more brothers on behalf of another brother whom the applicants wish to nominate for either the Freeman H. Allen Leadership Award or the Sigma Alpha Award. When nominating another brother, state on the application that the application is being made to nominate [name of nominee] for the [Freeman H. Allen Leadership Award or the Sigma Alpha Award]. Answer the questions with information about the nominee. Sign the application (statements about the nominee will be deemed made "to the best of your knowledge").

Please note that the above list of scholarships and awards is for informational purposes only, and the awards committee is not obligated to award any scholarship whether named above. The awards committee may award different or additional scholarships based on its sole discretion. All applications, including financial aid information, will be kept confidential among the New York Zeta Fund Board and its advisers, and subject to disclosure as required by law, regulation or court order. All awards or scholarships will be presented at a formal awards ceremony or banquet. All award or scholarship recipients must attend the ceremony or banquet in person in order to receive their award or scholarship, unless a written excuse is provided prior to the event; otherwise the award or scholarship may be forfeited.
